15-Minute Sushi Wraps (Kid-Approved!)

These easy sushi wraps come together in under 15 minutes—just prep the rice ahead of time! A fun, build-your-own dinner packed with sweet, spicy flavour and family-style magic.

This might be my favourite 15-minute recipe. Why? Because I totally cheated…and it still worked like a charm.

Here’s the deal: Sticky rice takes longer than 15 minutes. But when you prep it in advance (I make a big batch on the weekend!), these sushi wraps come together in minutes. No stove, no stress. Just a handful of delicious toppings, a quick spicy mayo, and boom—dinner is served.

And honestly? My kids are obsessed. Like, “Mom, we don’t want pasta again—we want the sushi wraps!” obsessed.

How to Make Family-Style Sushi Wraps (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: If you haven’t already, cook your sticky rice and let it cool (or better yet, make it the night before and pop it in the fridge!).

Step 2: Slice your mango, avocado, and cucumber into thin strips. Gather your fish, nori sheets, and sesame seeds.

Step 3: Make the spicy mayo by mixing mayo with sriracha to your taste.

Step 4: Lay everything out on the table and let everyone build their own wraps. It’s basically sushi night with no rolling pressure!

Want to try your hand at a full sushi roll? Here’s how:

How to Roll a Sushi Wrap (Optional!)

  1. Place your nori sheet shiny side down. (A sheet of parchment underneath helps!)
  2. Spread a generous ¾ cup of rice evenly over the nori, leaving a couple of centimetres bare at the top.
  3. Add your fillings in a thin line across the rice.
  4. Wet your finger and run it along the bare edge of the nori to help it seal.
  5. Tightly roll into a log. Seal the edge with a bit more water.
  6. Slice in half and enjoy!

Not into rolling? No problem—just throw everything into a bowl and call it a sushi bowl. Still delicious. Still fun.

Tips from a Dietitian Mom

What kind of fish can I use?

Anything you love and have on hand—smoked salmon, cooked salmon, canned tuna, or tuna poke from the store (I get mine at Costco!).

Can I make this vegetarian?

Totally! Try tofu strips, edamame, or even roasted sweet potato slices for a plant-based twist.

My kids aren’t into seaweed…help?

Try cutting the nori into strips and serving them on top like a garnish—or let them skip it and scoop everything into a bowl. It’s all good.

What age is this suitable for?

This one is great for kids who are at least 4+, but younger ones can enjoy a deconstructed bowl version. Just skip the spicy mayo for the little ones and serve with a soy sauce dip instead.

Why Family-Style Meals Just Work

As a dietitian and mom, I can’t hype family-style meals enough. When kids get to serve themselves, they feel more in control. It builds trust, encourages exploration, and can seriously reduce mealtime stress. Win-win.

Cuisine Asian
Servings 5 Wraps

Ingredients

For the Sushi Wrap

  • 4 cups cooked sticky rice, made in advance
  • 1-2 fresh mangoes, sliced, or frozen mango, thawed
  • 1-2 avocados, sliced
  • 1 cucumber, sliced into matchsticks
  • 1 cup total of a variety of fish (smoked salmon, cooked and cooled salmon, tuna poke for example), or to taste
  • 5 sheets nori
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds

For the Spicy Mayo

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2-3 tsp sriracha or other hot sauce

Instructions

  • Make the rice in advance according to package directions. If making it fresh, pop it into a shallow dish and refrigerate until room temperature before using.
  • Prepare the mango, avocado and cucumber, as directed. Gather your fish, nori sheets and sesame seeds.
  • Make the spicy mayo: To a small bowl, add the mayo. Stir in the sriracha or your favourite hot sauce, starting with 2 teaspoons, to taste.
  • Set out all of the prepared ingredients for everyone to create and roll their own sushi wraps. If you need a little help with rolling, see the Notes below.

Notes

To roll your sushi wraps: Place the nori sheet shiny side down (you can use a piece of parchment paper to help with rolling if you wish). Spread a generous ¾ cup of rice in an even layer over the nori, leaving a few centimetres uncovered at the top. In a thin, even layer, top the rice with your desired fillings. Run a damp finger across the top edge of the nori to help seal it after rolling. Grasp the end of the nori roll and begin to roll it tightly into a log. Seal the long edge of the log with a little more water. Slice in half widthwise, and enjoy!
